JOHN NICHOLLS, of Hill, in the Parish of Halesowen, Salop.,  Born c. 1670.  M c. 1695 Joyce (Born c. 1670. Bur. 5 Sept. 1727 at Halesowen – recorded in the burial register as “Joyce Nichols [sic] Wid. de Hill”).  At the baptism of his son William he & his wife were recorded in the Halesowen baptismal register as “John Nicholes [sic] & Joyce his wife de Long Lane”, 2 Feb. 1698/9.  Bur. 25 Aug. 1727 at Halesowen – recorded in the burial register as “John Nichols [sic] de Hill”.  He had issue:

1.John, of Hill, in the Parish of Halesowen.,  Born c. 1700.  M 11 April 1726 at Halesowen, Martha Price.  At his marriage he & his wife were recorded in the Halesowen marriage register as “John Nichols [sic] & Martha Price, both of this parish”.  At the baptism of his daughter Hannah he & his wife were recorded as “John & Martha Nicholls, of Hill”.  Recorded as “John Nicholls of Halesowen, Co. Worc., Yeoman” he entered into a lease for 40 years of land in Halesowen from “St. Love Harrison, of Deptford, Spinster”, 25 Feb. 1744/5.  Will dated 5 July 1781 – in which he was described as “John Nicholls of the Parish of Halesowen in ye County of Salop, Husbandman” & mentioned “my house, barn, garden & land with all & every their appurtenances I which I now live & also all those my houses & land situate & being at a place called Hurst Green, all which said buildings & lands are in the said Parish of Halesowen & County aforesaid”.  Will Proved at the Consistory Court of Worcester, 29 June 1786.  He had issue:

6a.Phebe, Bapt. 19 Dec. 1742 at Halesowen.  She was mentioned in her father’s will with her siblings as “my three daughters Mary, Phebe & Esther” under which they received a bequest of £20 each & their father provided that their brother Samuel was to “at his own expense turneth [sic] my said barn in Long Lane into a house, & permitteth [sic] my said daughters Phebe & Esther to live therein rent free during ye life or each of them” , 5 July 1781.

10a.Samuel, Bapt. 24 March 1750 at Halesowen.  M 15 June 1780 at Halesowen, Nancy Chambers.  He was mentioned in his father’s will as “my son Samuel Nicholls” under which he received a gift of his father’s “house, barn, garden & land with all & every their appurtenances I which I now live & also all those my houses & land situate & being at a place called Hurst Green, all which said buildings & lands are in the said Parish of Halesowen & County aforesaid”, 5 July 1781.

WILLIAM NICHOLLS, of Hill, in the Parish of Halesowen, Salop.,  Bapt. 2 Feb. 1698/9 at Halesowen – recorded in the baptismal register as “William the son of John Nicholes [sic] & Joyce his wife de Long Lane”.  M 1st c. 1728 Joan (Born c. 1705.  Bur. 27 Nov. 1733 at Halesowen – recorded in the burial register as “Joan, wife of William Nichols [sic] de Hill”).  At the baptisms of his children he & his 1st wife were recorded as “Wm [sic] & Jone [sic] Nichols [sic] of Hill”, 28 Sept. 1729, 15 Jan. 1730/1 & 27 Nov. 1733.  M 2nd 26 Feb. 1733/4 at Halesowen, Sarah Deeley.  At his 2nd marriage he & his 2nd wife were recorded in the Halesowen marriage register as “William Nichols & Sarah Deeley, both of this parish”.  M Lic.  M 3rd 5 Aug. 1754 at Halesowen, Ann Foley (She was mentioned in her husband’s will as “my present loving wife Ann Nichols [sic]” under which she was appointed sole executrix, 17 Jan. 1759.  Recorded as “Ann Nicholls, Widow, the sole executrix named in the last will & testament of William Nicholls late of the Parish of Halesowen in the County & Diocese of Worcester deceased” she was granted probate of her husband’s will, 24 Aug. 1772).  At his 3rd marriage he & his 3rd wife were recorded in the Halesowen marriage register as “William Nicholls of this Parish Widower & Ann Foley of this Parish Widow married by licence”.  Will dated 17 Jan. 1759 – in which he was described as “William Nichols [sic] of the Parish of Halesowen in the County of Salop, Miller” & made a gift to “my present loving wife” “of my messuage or tenement wherein I now dwell with all & every appurtenances thereunto belonging situate lying standing & being in the said Parish of Halesowen in the County of Salop aforesaid for all the remainder of my term & interest I have therein she paying the rents & performing the covenants contained in the indenture of lease by which the same is held which on the lessee’s part ought to be paid & performed” & “two other messuages cottages tenements or dwelling houses with gardens, & a parcel of land, with all & every the appurtenances thereunto belonging, which said premises are situate lying standing & being in the said Parish of Halesowen in the County of Salop aforesaid, & now in the holding & possession of Isaac Jones & Benjamin Rose, for all the remainder of my term & interest I have therein she paying the rents & performing the covenants contained in the indenture of lease by which the same is held which on the lessee’s part ought to be paid & performed”.  Will Proved at the Consistory Court of Worcester, 24 Aug. 1772.  He had issue:

ELIZABETH NICHOLLS, Born 1729 – as recorded by her grandson William Townshend (1801-1881) in his ‘Book of Gleanings’, in which he recorded family events.  Bapt. 28 Sept. 1729 at Halesowen – recorded in the baptismal register as “Elizabeth, daughter of Wm [sic] & Jone [sic] Nichols [sic], of Hill”.  M Lic. dated 1 Sept. 1753 – in which she was recorded as “Elizabeth Nicholds [sic] of the parish of Halesowen in the County of Salop & Diocese of Worcester aged 24 years, a spinster”.  M 1 Sept. 1753 at Oldbury, Co. Worc., WILLIAM TOWNSHEND, “Farmer”, of Illey, Halesowen, Salop (near Birmingham) (Bapt. 11 Feb. 1729/30 at Halesowen – recorded in the baptismal register as “Wm [sic] son of Jos [sic] & Sarah Townsing [sic] de Town”.  He was mentioned in the will of his father-in-law William Nicholls as “my son-in-law William Townsend [sic]” under which he received a bequest of 1s, 17 Jan. 1759.  Died 6 Dec. 1792 at Illey).  She was mentioned in her father’s will as “my daughter Elizabeth Townsend [sic] wife of the abovesaid [sic] William Townsend [sic]” under which she received a bequest of 1s, 17 Jan. 1759.  Mentioned in her husband’s will as “my beloved wife Elizabeth Townshend” under which she received a gift of her husband’s “…two leasehold cottage dwelling houses nail shops & gardens & all & every the appurtenances thereunto belonging situate lying & being near a place called Quinton in the said Parish of Halesowen in the County of Salop & are now in the tenure of Amos Parkes & Thomas Fay”, 23 Nov. 1792.  She was described as “my grandmother Elizabeth Townshend, nee Nicholls” by her grandson William Townshend (1801-1881) in his ‘Book of Gleanings.  Will dated 19 Dec. 1802 – in which she was described as “Elizabeth Townshend Widow of the Town of Birmingham in the County of Warwick” & made provision for “my cottage houses in Carthouse Lane in the Parish of Halesowen in the County of Salop in the possession of Mary Fay & John Parkes”.  Died 7 April 1808 – as recorded by her grandson William Townshend (1801-1881) in his ‘Book of Gleanings’.  Her death was recorded by her son William in his family bible as follows – “Elizabeth Townshend, wife of the above William Townshend, & mother to him abovementioned, died the 7th of April 1808 aged 79 & buried as above”.  Bur. 10 April 1808 at St. Lawrence’s Churchyard, Northfield.  Will Proved at the Consistory Court of Lichfield, 12 April 1808.  She had issue:  (See TOWNSHEND)
