Photograph R shows a Midland white-ware piece. It has slash decoration which may also have been functional. It is thought by slashing the handle in various places along its length it was better able to withstand firing. This piece has a yellowish-green glaze.
Midland sandy-ware handle is shown in Photograph S and is unusual in that it shows three distinctive thumb marks where the top of the handle joined the jug by the rim. The handle was squeezed and pressed to secure it to the body of the vessel. There is a transparent lead glaze on the reverse side.
